Recently, I had the opportunity to design a gorgeous wedding ring that incorporates both symbolic and practical design elements for a very unique couple. The couple actually met on Twitter, built their relationship between the U.S. and Australia and fittingly became engaged via Skype. A true modern romance!
Since a ring did not accompany the proposal, I really wanted to design a piece that represents both their engagement and union. Starting with ideas from the groom, it was very clear that his fiancé adored classic twisted bands and very low profile center stones. By merging the idea of a traditional solitaire engagement ring with a channel set band, the final concept is a delicate piece that is the perfect representation of their relationship.
The common twist design was refreshed with a simple plain band and solitaire to symbolize their engagement, plus an intertwined channel set band to represent her wedding ring. To achieve the desired low profile, yet keep the ring feeling lighter than the popular low set bezel, the twisted bands were opened up where they intersected and the center stone was nestled between them. The end result is a quintessential prong set solitaire, but with much less height than the classic design.
By paying close attention to the story of the couple’s romance and design preferences, I was able to modify a traditional design to create a ring both meaningful and practical for the lucky bride. Although the design could easily work as a standalone engagement ring, the twisted bands carry so much more meaning for this very special ring!
